How to Pack Fragile Items Like a Pro Mover
Glassware, TVs, art, and that one heirloom mirror - here is exactly how professional movers pack fragile items so they survive the truck.
Most "broken in the move" stories are really "packed wrong" stories. The truck is rarely the problem - it is the empty space inside a box that lets things shift, knock, and crack. Here is how a professional moving crew packs the fragile stuff.
The Universal Rule: Eliminate Empty Space
Every fragile box should feel solid when you shake it. If something rattles, add more paper. Crumpled packing paper is cheap insurance - use twice as much as you think you need.
Glassware and Dishes
- Use a dish-pack box (double-walled). Standard boxes crush under stack weight.
- Wrap each plate individually, then stack them on edge like records - not flat. Plates on edge survive drops; stacked plates do not.
- Wrap stemware from the rim down, twist paper into the bowl, then bundle in groups of two.
- Line the bottom and top of the box with two inches of crumpled paper.
Flat-Screen TVs
- Original box is best. If you do not have it, use a TV-specific moving box with foam corners.
- Never lay a TV flat - the screen flexes and cracks. Transport upright, strapped against a padded wall of the truck.
- Photograph the cable layout on the back before you unplug anything. Future-you will be grateful.
Mirrors, Art, and Framed Photos
- Tape a giant X across the glass with painter's tape. If it breaks, the shards stay put instead of spraying.
- Wrap in a moving blanket, then slide into a mirror carton or sandwich between two pieces of rigid cardboard.
- Mark "GLASS - THIS SIDE UP" on both sides. Movers cannot guess.
Lamps, Vases, and Awkward Shapes
- Remove shades and bulbs. Wrap shades in clean paper (newsprint ink transfers) and pack them in a separate box - never stacked.
- Stuff vases with paper from the inside before wrapping the outside.
Heirlooms and the "Do Not Pack" Box
Jewellery, passports, hard drives, prescription meds, and the one ceramic bowl your grandmother made - these never go on the truck. Pack a single labelled "Do Not Load" box and put it in your car. Tell the crew about it during the walkthrough so it is not accidentally loaded.
